What to Expect

The Assessment Process

Our assessment process is structured to be thorough, transparent, and as straightforward as possible for clients and their families. Below is a step-by-step overview of what to expect.

1

Initial Intake

Prior to assessment

The process begins with completing an online or paper-based intake form. This form collects relevant background history, current concerns, and referral information. You will be asked to provide consent for the assessment and, where applicable, consent for information to be shared with relevant third parties such as a GP, school, or funding body.

  • Complete the intake and consent form
  • Provide a copy of any existing reports or relevant clinical records
  • A brief phone consultation (approximately 15 minutes) may be arranged to confirm assessment suitability, clarify the purpose of the referral, and answer logistical questions
  • Fee information and payment requirements will be communicated at this stage
2

Assessment Session(s)

2–6 hours total (varies by assessment type)

Assessment sessions are conducted in-person at our Burleigh Heads rooms or, where appropriate, via secure telehealth. Sessions involve a combination of standardised psychometric testing, structured clinical interviews, and behavioural observation. The number and duration of sessions depends on the type of assessment.

  • Testing involves structured tasks measuring cognitive, academic, behavioural, or psychological domains
  • For child assessments, caregivers are interviewed separately; standardised cognitive testing is typically conducted one-on-one
  • You do not need to prepare or practise for assessments; results reflect your current functioning
  • Breaks are available during sessions, and reasonable adjustments can be accommodated
3

Report Preparation

Typically 1-2 weeks after completion of sessions

Following the completion of all assessment sessions, results are scored and interpreted. A comprehensive written report is prepared documenting assessment findings, diagnostic impressions (where applicable), and evidence-based recommendations. Report preparation times may vary depending on the complexity of the assessment.

  • All test scores are interpreted within the context of the individual's history and presentation
  • Reports include a summary of findings and practical, evidence-based recommendations
  • Reports are prepared in clear, accessible language and comply with relevant professional and funding body standards
  • You will be notified if preparation is expected to take longer than the estimated timeframe
4

Feedback Session

Approximately 50–60 minutes

A feedback session is offered following the completion of the written report. This appointment provides an opportunity to discuss the assessment findings, review the written report, and ask questions about recommendations. Feedback sessions can be conducted in-person or via secure telehealth. For child assessments, feedback is provided to the parent or caregiver.

  • The psychologist will explain the assessment findings in clear, non-technical language
  • You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the report and its recommendations
  • Guidance on how to share the report with schools, treating clinicians, or funding bodies is provided
  • A copy of the signed, finalised report is provided at or following the feedback session
Telehealth Assessments

Selected assessments can be conducted via telehealth using a secure, encrypted video platform. Not all assessment types are suitable for telehealth delivery. Suitability will be confirmed during the intake process.
